National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Director Dr. Anthony Fauci has urged Americans to disinvite unvaccinated family members from their holiday gatherings as the fast-spreading COVID-19 Omicron variant surges nationwide.
‘We’re dealing with a serious enough situation now that if there’s an unvaccinated person, I would say, ‘I’m very sorry, but not this time. Maybe another time when this is all over,” said Fauci in an interview with MSNBC on Tuesday night.
Guest host Alicia Menendez had asked Fauci if people should feel safe getting on planes to be with their families for the holidays. Fauci said vaccinated people could so provided they were very careful and prudent.
“Certainly any kind of travel increases the risk,” he replied. “If you are careful and prudent, and the travel you feel is important, necessary travel, like seeing a member of the family that you have not seen for a long time if you are vaccinated and boosted, and the people that you are visiting are vaccinated and boosted. You can get on a plane and travel, so long as you’re very prudent at the airport of wearing a mask.”
Menendez asked: “If someone in your family is not vaccinated, should you ask them not to show up?”
Fauci replied: “Yes, I would do that. I think we’re dealing with a serious enough situation right now that if there’s an unvaccinated person, I would say, ‘I’m very sorry, but not this time, maybe another time when this is all over.’”
Although he has repeatedly denied it under oath, Fauci’s NIAID reportedly funded risky gain-of-function research on bat coronaviruses by funneling taxpayer dollars through the EcoHealth Alliance, a U.S. non-profit, to the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
According to the latest data, Omicron now accounts for 73.2 percent of new cases in the United States, and about 80 percent of the cases have been in fully vaccinated people.
New York, Maryland, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, and Florida are seeing major surges in new COVID cases, according to the latest data.
Although Omicron has proven to be highly transmissible, it is less pathogenic than the previous strains of COVID, in that it replicates in the upper respiratory tract, rather than the lower lungs, according to medical experts.
CDC Director Rochelle Walensky appeared to contradict Joe Biden Wednesday, when she said the current surge in cases was expected. In his speech, Tuesday, Biden said that “the Omicron virus spread even more rapidly than anybody thought.”
“We expected this, because we have seen the doubling times of this virus in other countries have been really rapid and that’s what we’re seeing here in the United States,” Walensky insisted in an interview with the Today Show on Wednesday.
Internist, cardiologist, and epidemiologist Dr. Peter McCullough on Tuesday took issue with the Biden’s dark messaging on the Omicron surge, and shared a more positive message ahead of the holidays.
“My message for America is one that’s positive, it’s joyous,” McCullough told Fox News’ Jesse Watters on Tuesday following Biden’s speech. “We’ve learned so much about COVID-19. Our treatment of COVID-19 is causing large numbers of individuals to avoid the hospital, avoid death, recover, and then natural immunity. It’s a very positive story as we’re working our way through the pandemic. Americans have suffered enough. In my view, they don’t need a strong negative message moving into the holidays.”
